Mobile App Development is recognised as the one of the most desired professional skills in the IT job market worldwide. Acknowledging the need to provide state-of-the-art professional skills to young early-stage professionals, the International Hellenic University organises this 8-hour long hands-on workshop, that will address both cross-platform and native applications development, as well as important business and design related aspects.

Attendance is free for graduates or senior students of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or any other technology related school with basic computer programming skills.

Part A – Cross-platform web apps

Course Summary

This course will kick off with some html/ css/ javascript basics and an introduction to the web development environment and popular programming tools. Next up, the fundamental principals of «mobile» websites development will be presented along with best practices and design guidlines. This will be followed by hands on examples in the lab where participants will first develop a mini mobile compatible website using only html and css and then work on a cms to produce a full scale website compatible with mobile devices.

: 4 lecture hours


Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the user requirements when designing a «mobile» web site
  • Identify and correct common CSS errors for mobile devices
  • Start building a cross-platform, cross-device website


Audience

This is an introductory course for both students and young professionals interested in web development topics pertaining to mobile devices.


Prerequisites

Basic knowldedge of HTML/ CSS.


Instructors

Chrysa Papazoglou holds degrees in Informatics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (BSc & MSc). She has been working as a freelance developer for over 10 years, specialising in database desktop and web applications and web sites.

Gerasimos Chatzidamianos has studied Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, holds an MBA degree and MSc in Information Technology. He has worked as web developer in customedialabs.com, paretria.gr, springinteractive.gr and as freelancer. The last two years he specialises in the development of mobile applications for iOS and is the founder of NSLoom.com.

Part B – Android Camp, from idea to successful business

Course Summary

Android Camp course is a hands-on training on visualizing, designing and building mobile applications using Android SDK. Android Camp course explains step by step the philosophy behind Android app development, introducing marketing concepts during the app production phase and elaborating thoroughly on business models and app monetization aspects.

By the end of the course, each participant will build their own complete Android application incorporating most of the key aspects of the platform. We will build upon the modified during (Colab Android DevCamp) marakana yamba android version located here https://github.com/NiobiumLabs/LearningAndroidYamba.

This course has been updated for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Start Building your own Android apps
  • Understand how Android apps work, their life cycle, manifest, Intents, and using external resources.
  • Utilise the power of background services, threads, and notifications in order to deliver an enhanced user experience.
  • Use Android’s communication APIs for SMS, telephony, network management, GPS and internet resources (HTTP).
  • Secure, test, package, and deploy Android™ applications


Audience

This course is specially designed for software developers with business concerns, interested in designing, deploying, and testing applications for the Android platform. Targets both novices and professionals, who already have experience in developing mobile applications for other platforms.


Prerequisites

Java or other OOP language experience is required to get the most benefit from this training.


Instructor

Yiannis Doxaras has studied theoretical physics in University of Athens, National Technical University of Athens and University of Cambridge. He is CEO of Niobium Labs, one of the leading mobile agencies in Europe and co-founder of warp.ly, a b2b mobile marketing platform for large corporations. In the past he was a systems architect for major telecom providers in Greece and Vodafone UK.

He specialises in location aware mobile applications (iphone, android, blackberry, wp7) and vertical geo-marketing solutions. Yiannis is an active committer in various open source projects mainly with java, python, php and ruby technologies.
